On Android

Download the .m4a file first. Menus differ a little by phone; these steps cover Google Clock (Pixel and many others) and Samsung.

Google Clock

  1. Open Clock and go to the Alarm tab.
  2. Tap the alarm’s sound (the bell icon or the current sound name).
  3. Tap Add new under your sounds and pick the downloaded file (look in Downloads).

Samsung Clock

  1. Open Clock, tap the alarm, then tap Alarm sound.
  2. Tap + and choose the downloaded file.

On iPhone

Download the .m4r file. The iPhone Clock app can’t open sound files directly, so you add the sound as a ringtone first. Pick one of two ways.

With GarageBand (on the iPhone)

  1. Download the sound in Safari. It is saved to the Downloads folder in the Files app.
  2. Open GarageBand (free from Apple) and start a new project, for example with the Audio Recorder.
  3. Switch to the tracks view, tap the loop icon, choose Files, then Browse items from the Files app, and pick your sound. Drag it onto the track.
  4. Save it as a ringtone: go to My Songs, press and hold the project, tap Share → Ringtone → Export.
  5. Set the alarm: Clock → Alarms → your alarm → Sound, and pick the new ringtone at the top of the list.

With a Mac

  1. Download the .m4r file on your Mac and connect your iPhone with a cable.
  2. Open Finder and click your iPhone in the sidebar.
  3. Drag the .m4r file onto the iPhone window. It is copied over as a ringtone.
  4. Set the alarm in Clock → Alarms → Sound.

Tips for an alarm that actually works

  • Test it once. Set the alarm for 2 minutes from now and check the volume.
  • Short sounds repeat. A 2-second rooster becomes a very insistent rooster. That’s normal.
  • Melodic beats beepy. If you wake up groggy, try a melody like reveille or the music box.
  • Change it every few weeks. Your brain learns to ignore a sound it hears every morning.
  • Heavy sleeper? Use a sound with a sharp start and put your phone across the room.

Questions people ask

Why is setting a custom alarm sound harder on iPhone?

The iPhone Clock app only offers built-in tones, ringtones and songs from your Apple Music library. A sound file has to be added as a ringtone first, which takes GarageBand or a Mac.

How long can an iPhone alarm sound be?

Ringtones on iPhone can be up to 40 seconds. That is why our iPhone (.m4r) files are 30 seconds or shorter. The alarm repeats the sound until you stop it.

Which file do I need for Android?

The .m4a file. Android phones play it in the Clock app, and it is the full-length sound. MP3 files work too if you have them.

My new sound doesn’t show up in the list. What now?

On Android, check that the file finished downloading and look in the Downloads folder in the file picker. On iPhone, ringtones added with GarageBand appear at the top of the Ringtones list; restarting the Clock app can help.
